Mimmo Malandra

Mimmo Malandra received his diploma in saxophone from the Conservatorio di Musica “Luisa D’Annunzio” as a student in the class of Gaetano Di Bacco. He has attended masterclasses taught by Claude Delangle, Eugéne Rousseau, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Arno Bornkamp, Francisco Martinez, Alain Crepin, and Vincent David, as well as Gaetano Di Bacco, Enzo Filippetti, Giuseppe Berardini, and Fabrizio Paoletti of the prestigious “Quartetto di Sassofoni Accademia.”
He has attended courses with saxophone professors from the Conservatorio Superiore di Oviedo in Spain and the Mannheim Musikhochschule in Germany.
He has attended a course at the Accademia superiore “Città della Musica e del Teatro” under the artistic direction of the Franco Mezzena, and a course at the Accademia italiana del flauto of Rome given by Jean-Yves Fourmeau.
He has twice participated in Campus Europeo del Sassofono with Claude Delangle.
He has given concerts in various combinations: saxophone and piano, saxophone and organ, as a soloist with chamber ensembles, in saxophone ensembles, and in collaboration with various orchestras including the Orchestra Sinfonica Internazionale Giovanile Fedele Fenaroli, Orchestra Sinfonica del Teatro Maruccino, Orchestra Sinfonica Europea Ars Musica, Artisti della Settimana Mozartiana, Orchestra Sinfonica Gabriele D’Annunzio, I Solisti del Teatro Marrucino, La Società Aquilana dei Concerti B. Barattelli, Big Band F. Fenaroli, and I Solisti Aquilani.
He has collaborated with the following conductors: Donato Renzetti, Claudio Desderi, Luigi Piovano, Piero Romano, Antonio Cericola, Pasquale Veleno, Angelo Valori, Antonio Ciacca, Jan Latham Koening, Patrick Murray and Gabriele Pezone.
He has collaborated with the Brazilian artist Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta.
In addition, he has collaborated with New York saxophonist Andy Farber on an international project for the promotion of contemporary music that included Calogero Palermo and Antonello Neri.
In the realm of jazz, he has participated in a recording of a work with Diana Torto, Elisabetta Antonini, Achille Succi, Javier Girotto and Maurizio Rolli.
He has participated in the INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF SAX in Nova Gorica, Slovenia three times. This is a program was given by the "Quartetto di Sassofoni Accademia.”
He has won various national and international competitions, including the prestigious AMA CALABRIA Competition and the “Kulturni Dom di Nuova Gorica” Competition for young saxophonists.
In the realm of contemporary music, he has won the Kavatik Prize “Carla Fallagrassa” with an interpretation of a composition that was dedicated to him, and he has received the 2015 International Rotary Club Young Musician prize.
He has given concerts as a soloist in Greece, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Romania, Slovenia and Italy.
He has collaborated with a variety of associations, including Associazione Abruzzese Amici della Musica, Estate Musicale Frentana, Kavatik Ensemble, Associazione Arma Aeronautica, Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Atene, Centro studi per la musica antica G. D’Annunzio, Istituto di Alta Cultura of the Conservatorio “Luisa D’Annunzio,” and CIDIM.
He teaches at the Accademia dei Templi in Chieti, and he also teaches pre-conservatory courses at the Conservatorio “A. Casella” in L’Aquila.
Of great importance is the current collaboration with major contemporary composers such as Ennio Morricone, Sergio Rendine, Luis Bacalov, Krzysztof Penderecky, Marco Betta, Armando Krieger, Nicola Piovani, Paolo Cavallone, Vincenzo Palermo, Lorenzo Ferrero, Giovanni D'Aquila, and Cecilia Chailly. He will record saxophone works by these composers in Sweden.
He is involved in the research and dissemination of Italian music for saxophone with a particularly emphasis on contemporary music and music for the cinema and the theater. He is a researcher of innovative techniques for the instrument and an investigator of new musical languages for the saxophone.
Mimmo Malandra has given masterclasses in Italy, Greece, Romania and France, and he has participated in conferences on Italian music for saxophone and on international contemporary music. He has collaborated with Serge Bertocchi, in which he presented unpublished contemporary works and repertoire for saxophone, and gave the first performance of Waveform by S. Taglietti (Editions Rai-Trade), a composition dedicated to him.
He is a founder of the “SaxSophia Quartet” for which composers Germano Mazzocchetti, Andrea Morricone and Dinos Costantinides have written new works. The quartet has given world premieres at concerts in Italy, Switzerland and Romania.
He is currently collaborating with composer Sergio Rendine as saxophonist soloist for a new composition dedicated to Aldo Moro. Together, they have presented the world premiere of one of the movements of the work at the “Festival della Parola” in Parma. He also played a world premiere at “Concert For Peace – Assisi Sacred Sound 2015”,broadcast worldwide for Rai World – Melos International , one work for saxophone and organ,written by M° Sergio Rendine for the 70 years since the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki
He has presented a world premiere with composer-pianist Armando Victor Krieger for the Embassy of Argentina in Italy.
He is a “Selmer Paris” artist and a “Vandoren Paris” artist.
He has received reviews from the following newspapers and periodicals: Cronaca d’Abruzzo, Il Centro, Giornale d’Abruzzo, Il Messaggero, Quotidiano d’Abruzzo, L’Espresso (Italia), Courrier Picard, CRR Journal de Amiens (France), and The Bulletin of the National Association of Composers (Los Angeles).
