Antonio Cánovas Moreno
Antonio Cánovas Moreno was born in 1979 in Totana (Murcia, Spain). After training at the professional conservatories of music in Ávila and Murcia, he began his studies at the Superior Conservatory of Music "Oscar Esplá" in Alicante, with Mr. José Manuel Zaragoza as his teacher. He graduated in 2002 with honours and, with the unanimous agreement of the jury, was awarded the Saxophone Graduation Prize.
At the same time, he completed his training with internationally renowned teachers such as Claude Delangle, Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Jean-Marie Londeix, Marie-Bernardette Charrier, Arno Bornkamp, Daniel Kientzy, Vincent David, Christian Wirth, Fabrizio Mancuso, the Habanera Quartet, Eric Devallon...
As a soloist, he has accompanied the UCAM Symphony Orchestra, the "Ciudad de Oviedo" Harmony Orchestra and the Valenciennes Wind Orchestra (France). He has taken part in different formations (orchestra, piano duet, quartets…) in France (Poitiers and Dijon), the United Kingdom (London and Cardiff), Holland (Groningen), Italy (Naples), Bulgaria (Sofia and Varna) and Spain (Asturias, Castilla y León, Cantabria, Navarra, Extremadura, Murcia, Andalusia, Valencian Community, Madrid, Castilla La Mancha…).
He plays regularly with the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias (OSPA), which performs in various regions of Spain, and with which he has made several recordings for the music label RTVE, with the Oviedo Philharmonic and with the Symphony Orchestra of Gijón. He has performed under the direction of great conductors such as Maximiano Valdés, Rossen Milanov, Kynan Johns, David Lockington, Perry So, Marzio Conti, Yves Abel, Fiedrich Haider, Oliver Díaz, Jordi Bernacer, Álvaro Alviach, among others.
On the pedagogical level, the University of Oviedo has called upon him to give lectures on the saxophone in order to promote this instrument and make it known in the academic world. He also collaborates as a saxophone teacher with the Young Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias (JOSPA). He also gives courses and master classes at the national level (Castilla y León, Asturias, Cantabria, Navarra, Andalusia, ...) and internationally in places such as Trinity College of Music in London and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff (both in the United Kingdom), Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht and Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen (both in the Netherlands), Conservatory of Music "Luisa D'Annunzio" in Pescara (Italy), Conservatory of Music "San Pietro a Majella" in Naples (Italy), Conservatorio di Musica "Tchaikovsky" of Nocera Terinese (Italy), Conservatoire de musique "Jean Philippe Rameau" in Dijon (France), Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espectáculo de Oporto (Portugal), Royal Conservatory of Music of Antwerp (Belgium), Fryderyk Chopin University of Music of Warsaw (Poland), Conservatory of Music "Eugène Bozza" of Valenciennes (France), Conservatorio di Musica "Arcangelo Corelli" of Messina (Italy) .
He has a degree in History and Music Sciences (Musicology) from the University of Oviedo and is currently professor of saxophone at the "Eduardo Martínez Torner" Superior Conservatory of Music of Oviedo (CONSMUPA), having obtained his place in a competition-opposition in 2006. He is also director of the Saxophone Ensemble of the Superior Conservatory of Music of Oviedo, with whom he has participated in various recordings and performances. In this ensemble have played great saxophonists such as Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Arno Bornkamp, Gerard McChrystal, Christian Wirth and Nicolas Prost. He is a member of several musical formations such as the duo Saxperience with the pianist Elena Miguélez, the duo Tubox with the organist Rubén Díez, and the saxophone quartet Saxtime, with whom he has given numerous concerts at national and international level. Parallel to these activities, he is preparing a doctoral thesis on contemporary Spanish saxophone music, which he began after obtaining the DEA (Diploma of Higher Studies) with distinction, obtaining the mention "sobresaliente", by the University of Oviedo, in his work entitled Contemporary Saxophone Composition in the Generation of 51.
He was the titular director of the Wind Orchestra of the Miererense Association of Friends of Music of Mieres (Asturias) from 2008 to 2018. He is currently conducting the Wind Orchestra of the Ateneo Musical de Mieres since 2018.
