Tenor Saxophone SELMER Radio Improved (1933), n°181XX, antique lacquered - Saxophonic
This is a rare visitor among our Legendary Saxophones: a tenor saxophone from the SELMER Super Sax series of the 1930s. More precisely, it was built in 1933, making it one of the very first tenors ever produced under the unofficial name “Radio Improved.” As an evolution within the SELMER Super Sax (SSS) line, the Radio Improved followed the famous Cigar Cutter starting in 1934 (the official launch year), before itself being replaced two years later by the Balanced Action.
It’s a special find for us, since our extensive selection of vintage SELMER saxophones focuses mainly on Balanced Action (BA), Super Action (SBA), and Mark VI models. All the more reason why this instrument is a welcome guest—one that surely won’t wait long for its next owner, because it is an exceptionally good horn.
Visually, this true player’s horn impresses with fully worn lacquer and a beautiful natural patina. Sonically, it offers a wonderfully mellow tone, dark color, and excellent projection.
If you’re curious, feel free to come by and try it out. Compare it with other instruments in our Legendary Saxophones family.
Perhaps you are the one this Radio Improved has been waiting for…
