SELMER Mark VII Tenor Saxophone (1979), n° 2924XX - Rare Bi-Color Model, Player's Horn
As SELMER saxophones from the Mark VI series are becoming increasingly rare and expensive, demand for and popularity of the SELMER Mark VII has been growing noticeably in recent months.
Rightly so, in our opinion, because the Mark VII is a really good saxophone and is not far off the late Mark VI (220XXX – 240XXX) in terms of sound. Only the mechanics of the Mark VII alto and tenor saxophones (Mark VII sopranino, soprano, and bass saxophones were never produced; only a few Mark VII test models were produced as baritone saxophones) are not as delicate as those of the Mark VI.
The SELMER Mark VII tenor saxophone described here is a rare “bi-color” model: the body, bell/knee joint, and neck are lacquered, and the mechanism is silver-plated. And because this SELMER tenor saxophone is now 46 years old, its lacquer has darkened beautifully and, in our opinion, looks wonderful in combination with the silver-plated mechanism. But that is, of course, a matter of taste!
We acquired this Mark VII from the heir of the original owner, who passed away a few years ago. We were told that he was a professional musician, which is confirmed by the condition of the saxophone when we received it about two years ago, as it was clear that this Mark VII had been played a lot.
As mentioned above, the demand for SELMER Mark VII saxophones has increased recently, so we have now completely overhauled this Mark VII in our SAXOPHONIC workshop. Of course, it looks great again, but more importantly, it sounds great too. And it does! Thanks to the INOX metal resonators we use, which are very similar to the nickel-plated SELMER resonators from the 1950s, and optimized key mechanisms, this Mark VII now has real sparkle without losing any of its tonal definition.
