Saxophone Ténor SELMER Paris Mark VI (1955) n°588XX, lacquered
Production of this SELMER Mark VI tenor saxophone began in the fall of 1954 and was shipped to the sister factory SELMER London in the first 3 months of 1955, where it was lacquered and fully assembled.
The first owner of this Mark VI played it for several years before selling it to its last owner. The second owner used it professionally for many decades, but was unable to play in recent years due to health reasons. His granddaughter made sure that this early SELMER Mark VI tenor saxophone found its way to us two years ago so that it could find a new playing partner.
We have just completely overhauled this Mark VI tenor saxophone in our SAXOPHONIC workshop. As is often the case, we used French CHANU pads with INOX metal resonators without rivets. Technically, it is in perfect condition.
As was customary at the time, this Mark VI was also completely overhauled and repainted after several years of use, probably towards the end of the 1950s. The lacquer has darkened beautifully over the decades and is already worn in some places. After so many years of playing, the surface tension of the lacquer has been greatly reduced, as is the case with new or newly lacquered saxophones, which I can feel immediately when playing this saxophone: it starts off beautifully light and immediately develops a powerful resonance. Its beautiful tone has a rather dark timbre, with soft frequencies nestling around its core. And that results in exactly the fine, velvety tone that I personally love when a Mark VI has it.
And this SELMER Mark VI has it! A wonderful horn!
