The Eddy, Damien Chazelle's new series on a Parisian jazz club
A musical drama about a jazz club...
Damien Chazelle is one of the new leaders of the Hollywood musical. After receiving several awards with his film Whiplash (2014), about a young jazz drummer in search of excellence, he consolidated his reputation with the musical La La Land (2016). The musical won numerous awards, including the Oscar for Best Director, Best Music, and Best Original Song for City of Stars.
After exploring the theme of space travel with First Man, Franco-American director Damien Chazelle returns to his first love: music and especially jazz! Netflix recently unveiled the trailer for The Eddy, a mini-series that will be available in full on the platform on May 8th.
It's the story of Elliot Udo, a New York pianist who became the boss of a Parisian jazz club in serious financial trouble. While trying to turn his club, The Eddy, around, he learns that his partner is involved in some dark business deals and several secrets come to light. Meanwhile, Elliot is also involved in a turbulent love affair with his group's lead singer. When his daughter Julie, a troubled teenager, suddenly arrives in Paris, Elliot's world begins to shake up...
To direct the 8 episodes of this season, Damien Chazelle has surrounded himself with other talents : Houda Benyamina (Divines), Alan Poul (Six Feet Under, The Newsroom) et Laïla Marrakchi (Le bureau des légendes).
An international cast and great musicians
In addition to André Holland in the lead role (Moonlight, American Horror Story), the cast includes Tahar Rahim (Best actor César for Un prophète), Alexis Manenti (Revelation of the year César for Les Misérables), Leïla Bekhti (Tout ce qui brille, Le Grand Bain), Joanna Kulig (Cold War), Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give)…
The cast also includes professional musicians: the central jazz group is made up of saxophonist Jowee Omicil (one of our loyal ambassadors), keyboardist Randy Kerber, trumpeter Ludovic Louis, drummer Lada Obradovic and bassist Damian Nueva Cortes. For the sake of authenticity, the music is recorded live on the film set. With these choices, Damien Chazelle reaffirms his passion for musical culture, all the more so as the director called upon the great Glen Ballard for composition.
We can't wait to discover this new creation by Damien Chazelle, and also to see our friend Jowee on the screen!
