Clarinetist Iván Marín began his musical studies at the age of four under the guidance of his grandfather Cristóbal Marín, a professional clarinetist who had himself studied with the renowned teacher Miguel Yuste. At the age of 17, after studying at the conservatories of music in Alicante and Madrid, Iván obtained the Advanced Studies Certificate from the University of Southern California. At this university, he studied for five years with the renowned professors Yehuda Gilad and Michele Zukovsky. During this period, he had the opportunity to be part of the Los Angeles Wind Quintet and was also principal clarinet with the YMF Debut and New West symphony orchestras.
He won first prize in competitions such as the Buffet Clarinet Competition of North America (Chicago, 1995), the Pasadena Instrumental Competition (Pasadena, California, 1995) and the Jennings Butterfield Young Performers Competition (Tucson, Arizona, 1994).
In 1992 and 1993 he has also participated, in several music festivals, including the prestigious Tanglewood Music Center. At this festival, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with which Iván had the opportunity to collaborate, is the orchestra in residence. He worked there with conductors such as Seiji Ozawa and Simon Rattle.
During his 15 years in the United States, he had the pleasure of working with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra (Florida) and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (Ohio). He also collaborated closely with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, then conducted by Mariss Jansons. These orchestras have taken him to some of the country's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall (New York), Heinz Hall (Pittsburgh), Royce Hall (Los Angeles) and Music Hall (Cincinnati).
Throughout his career, he has had the pleasure of playing chamber music with great musicians such as Elizabeth Rowe, Richie Hawley, Mitchell Lurie, Laura Gilbert, Frank Morelli, Andy Simionescu, Yehuda Gilad and Arthur Weisberg, among others. As a soloist, he has performed with various orchestras in the United States and Spain.
Teaching is one of his great passions. He has given master classes in several countries. He has also been Yehuda Gilad's assistant in courses given in the United States and Spain. The year he spent teaching at the University of South Florida is also of particular importance. In 2017, he launched a bilingual YouTube channel, where he shares his technical knowledge, interviews and concerts. And in 2018, he joined the prestigious PlayWithAPro platform, where he offers individual online lessons.
Teaching, repairing clarinets and making/restoring mouthpieces are just some of the activities that make up the creative world in which Iván naturally feels at home.
Since 2007, he has lived in La Coruña, where he is assistant principal clarinet with the Galician Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Grupo Instrumental del Siglo XX.
