Angel Molinos
From classical to contemporary performance, and from ensemble and orchestra playing to solo, Spanish clarinettist Angel Molinos is a versatile player who performs a wide range of repertoire, but has a deep commitment to the music of today. This special interest in new music has led him to premiere numerous works, including those that have been written for him by composers such as Josué Moreno, Matthew Whittall, Mikko Hassinen and Lotta Wennäkoski.
He studied at Musikene – Higher School of Music of the Basque Country (San Sebastián, Spain), Codarts – University of the Arts (Rotterdam, the Netherlands), and the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts in Helsinki (Finland), where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with the highest distinction. His doctoral research focused on the role of the bass clarinet as a solo instrument, with a special emphasis on Finnish contemporary music.
Since 2009, he has been based in Finland, where he regularly gives solo recitals and performs as a chamber and orchestra musician with most Finnish orchestras and ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Finnish National Opera, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki and Turku philharmonic orchestras, the symphony orchestras of Lahti, Oulu and Kuopio, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Kymi Sinfonietta, Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, Lapland Chamber Orchestra, St. Michel Strings, Uusinta Ensemble and the orchestra of the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki.
As a soloist, he has appeared with the Joensuu City Orchestra, the Pori Sinfonietta, the Glomas Vocal Ensemble and the Uuden Aajan Ensemble. He has also served as a research assistant and bass clarinet teacher at the Sibelius Academy.
