Richard Scholfield
Richard Scholfield is a Scottish saxophonist renowned for the richness of his sound and his artistic commitment. A specialist in solo and chamber repertoire, he stands out through prestigious collaborations and an innovative approach to the saxophone. Also an arranger, educator, and orchestral musician, he actively contributes to the development and visibility of his instrument in Scotland and beyond.
Richard Scholfield is an accomplished Scottish saxophonist, recognized for his exceptional artistry and praised for his "silken" sound by The Scotsman. Specialising in solo and chamber music, he has a talent for engaging audiences through expressive performances and thoughtful programming.
His dedication to chamber music is evident in his collaborations. As part of the Scholfield-Clarke Duo with pianist Iain Clarke, he performs regularly across the UK, including venues such as Perth Concert Hall and St Martin-in-the-Fields. He is also the soprano saxophonist of the Scottish Saxophone Quartet, and performs in quintet with the Resol String Quartet across Scotland.
Beyond performance, Richard Scholfield is a skilled arranger and transcriber. He reinterprets works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Frédéric Chopin, Amy Beach, and Olivier Messiaen, and contributes actively to saxophone education in Scotland. He teaches at the Douglas Academy and directs the Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra.
His achievements include being an artist for Légère Reeds and the City Music Foundation, as well as winning second prize at the Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition 2024 during the Mayfield Festival. He also performs with leading ensembles such as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
He holds a degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he studied with Josef Pacewicz and Arno Bornkamp, and has attended academies such as the Arosa Music Academy and the London Sinfonietta Academy.
