Art as a vector of resilience

From Sunday 18 to Friday 30 April 2021, Carnegie Hall presents Voices of Hope, a festival highlighting the resilience of artists and the life-affirming power of music and arts.

Through online concerts (ranging from orchestral and chamber works to folk and jazz), Voices of Hope explores how artists use their creativity to inspire change and uplift the human spirit, despite - and often because of - appalling circumstances and human tragedy.

Through the themes of war and conflict under oppressive regimes, social justice issues, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, it looks at how the arts can be used as tools for activism, resistance and solidarity.

Nearly 40 partner organizations extend the reach of Voices of Hope through exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, theater and dance performances.

“We have set out to create a special journey, inviting audiences to explore the inspiring role that artists have played in some of the darkest chapters of our shared history—capturing stories or a moment in time and expressing hope, courage, and resistance” said Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director.

Kinan Azmeh on the scene

Called "Lavishly talented, intensely soulful" by the New York Times, Kinan Azmeh is the virtuoso clarinetist who toured with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project, for which he won a Grammy in 2017. As a composer and instrumentalist, he creates haunting music blending classical and jazz with the sounds of his native Syria.

In Voices of Hope, the Kinan Azmeh Cityband performs works written in response to the conflicts in Syria and the Middle East. The cornerstone of the program is the world premiere of On Resilience, commissioned by Carnegie Hall - a new piece incorporating audio testimonies of Syrians after ten years of war and conflict.

The group will perform on April 29 at 7 p.m. (New York time). Video of the concert, broadcast live, will be available for free online until May 31.
