Clarinettist Josep Arnau Pastor received his training at the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Valencia. He studied with Hans Deinzer at the Music Improvement School of the Italian city of Bobbio. He took music courses at the University of Alcalá de Henares with Professor José Luis Estellés. He is a finalist in the Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in the Danish city of Odense and a semi-finalist in the International Clarinet Competition City of the Two Sisters in Seville. He received Honourable Mention at the T.I.M. International Chamber Music Competition, with the Trio Alea (clarinet, viola and piano).
Josep Arnau Pastor began his professional career with the Valencian Instrumental Group, taking part in several concert seasons with this important group specialising in the music of our time. Later he moved to Madrid where he was bass clarinet of the Guerrero Project, performing an intense activity as a member of the group and as a soloist. With the Guerrero Project, he has performed in numerous national and international festivals.
He has made recordings for Rtve, U.E.R., as well as various recordings. In addition to chamber music, he collaborates with some of the most important symphony orchestras such as Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquesta de Radio televisión española, Orquesta de los virtuosos de Moscú, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León… He collaborates closely with the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Orcam, with whom he has performed several full seasons. From this collaboration the clarinet quartet MAD4clarinets was created in 2004, with which he carries out an important activity. With Mad4clarinets, he premieres numerous pieces composed and dedicated to the quartet, including the clarinet quartet and orchestra version of Cristóbal Halffter's Quartet to Four in the symphonic hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid, alongside Orcam. The Spanish premiere of Franz Cibulka's Silvianum with the Madrid Municipal Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro Monumental de Madrid. As well as other important premieres and concerts in national and international festivals. From 2007 to 2014 he collaborates as soloist with the Santa Cecilia Classical Orchestra.
In addition to his work as a performer, his main activity is teaching. Since 1994 he has been teaching clarinet at various music conservatories. He is currently professor of clarinet at the Padre Antonio Soler Conservatory in San Lorenzo del Escorial, Madrid.
