Hélder Alves

Hélder Alves was born in Lamego in 1984.

Graduated from Conservatório de Música do Porto, studied at ESMAE and, afterwards, attended ESML where he finished his academic degree. He has a Master of Music degree and a Master of Music Education degree from ESML, with the publications "A abordagem do saxofone por Russell Peterson" and “O Contributo dos Exercícios Preparatórios para o Ensino do Saxofone”.

Attended many seminars and many national and international courses, deserving mention the ones conducted by Mario Marzi, Claude Delangle, Jean-Yves Formeau, Vincent David and Ed Boggard.

Has won several awards, such as:

As a soloist, he played with Banda da Armada Portuguesa, Orquestra de Sopros da ESML, Orquestra de Sopros do INATEL, Orquestra do Conservatório de Música do Porto, Orquestra Projecto ESML and with Orquestra de Sopros da EMCN.


Works with the following composers, in the formulation of a new saxophone repertoire: Tiago Derriça, José Martins, Sara Ross, Gonçalo Gato, Manuel Durão, Edward Luiz, Sofia Rocha, Sofia Borges, Daniel Moreira, Paulo Santiago, Sérgio Azevedo, Keita Matsumiya and Benjamin Boone.

In 2005, alongside the pianist Cândido Fernandes, originated the Duo XaSonaiP, wherewith in 2008 recorded the CD “Psychoterapy”. With that same group, was picked in 2009, among 250 applications, to participate in the NEU/NOW Festival, held in Lithuania.

Collaborates as a freelancer with several orchestras and ensembles, namely the Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra de Jazz do Hot Clube de Portugal, Orquestra Momentum Perpetuum, Orquestra de Sopros dos Templários, Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa and Ensemble Contemporaneus.

He’s a professor at the Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional, saxophonist for the Banda da Armada Portuguesa, and he’s part of the Duo XaSonaiP.
