The saxophone has an extended family of instruments with an extensive range of instrumental colour.
From the high, sparkling soprano, down through the well-known timbre of the alto, tenor and baritone to the rich droning sound of the bass saxophone.
The Netherlands Saxophone Octet, founded in 2014 by eight saxophonists recently graduated from Dutch conservatoires play their saxophones as if they are an orchestra and have made a number of adventurous arrangements from all sorts of chamber and orchestral compositions.
They arranged and performed Schönberg’s masterpiece originally for string sextet, Verklärte Nacht, for saxophone octet with permission from the Schönberg Foundation.
In addition they have permission to perform and make arrangements of ‘Canto Ostinato’ by Simeon ten Holt and ‘Figures in the Garden’ by Jonathan Dove.
The Octet has already performed in many venues and festivals, for example ‘Muziek op de Binnendieze’ (Den Bosch), City Proms (Leeuwarden), the Amsterdam Canal Festival, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and live from ‘Vondel CS’ a Dutch radio programme (Radio 4).
