 David Carter is principal clarinetist of the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, second clarinetist of the Tulsa Opera Orchestra, and serves as a board member and musician with Tulsa Camerata. He is the former principal clarinetist of the Dearborn (Mich.) Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra. Other recent playing engagements include those with the Fort Smith Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Orquesta Sinfónica de la UANL (Monterrey, Mexico) and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Carter is a founding member of Duo Avanzando with percussionist Ricardo Coelho de Souza. The duo has performed and presented masterclasses in the United States, Brazil, and Puerto Rico, including a recital with famed guitarist Sebastião Tapajós and percussionist Márcio Jardim. They made their ClarinetFest (festival of the International Clarinet Association) debut in 2012 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Several new works have been written for the duo, including premieres for Bernadette Speach, Kenneth Fuchs, William Ortiz, Justin Writer, Anne-Valerie Leibundgut Brittan and Beau Mansfield. Duo Avanzando released their first CD in Spring 2011. The journal of the International Clarinet Association called Projecting Back “ . . . a wonderful addition to any clarinet music library . . . ” and said the duo gave “ . . . very engaging performances.” Carter has appeared as soloist with orchestra and band on works by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Corigliano. He is scheduled to perform Aaron Copland’s “Clarinet Concerto” with the Fort Smith Symphony under John Jeter in May 2013. Dr. Carter is Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith where he teaches clarinet and saxophone. Prior to joining the faculty of UAFS he taught as an adjunct instructor at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma Baptist University, and Wayne State University (Detroit). He earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma as a Graduate Alumni Fellow where he was awarded the Provost’s “Dissertation Prize” in Humanities and Fine Arts for his DMA document, “Corigliano’s Clarinet Concerto: The Clarinetist’s View.” He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas, Master of Music degree from The Ohio State University and Graduate Certificate in Orchestral Studies from Wayne State University. His principal teachers include David Etheridge, Theodore Oien, James Pyne and James Gillespie. David Carter is a Selmer-Paris Artist and he plays on Privilege clarinets.
