Sean Murphy

As a performer, pedagogue, and author Sean Murphy is the archetype of the modern saxophonist. He holds his Masters of Music Degree in Saxophone Performance at the University of North Texas. While at North Texas he performed and recorded with the internationally acclaimed North Texas Wind Symphony, under the direction of Eugene Migliaro Corporon. These numerous recording projects included the celebrated Teaching Music in Performance Through Band Series, as well as the famed Composer Collections. He also holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. As an active performer, he is both an accomplished jazz and classical musician. As a jazz saxophonist he has performed with both Wayne Bergeron and Paul McKee, and as a classical saxophonist he has commissioned solo saxophone music by award winning composers Gregory Wanamaker, David Biedenbender, Eric Moe, Ruby Fulton, Kit Turnbull, and Stephen Barr. His articles on saxophone pedagogy and performance, as well as interviews with composers and notable saxophonists, have been accepted for publication in numerous distinguished music magazines and journals in North America, Europe, and Australia. These publications include The Instrumentalist, The Saxophone Journal, School Band and Orchestra Magazine, Jazz Ed Magazine and Teaching Music Magazine respectively. Sean’s numerous collaborative articles in The Instrumentalist have brought the pedagogy saxophonists Claude Delangle, Arno Bornkamp, Kenneth Tse, Timothy McAllister,Jean-Denis Michat, Branford Marsalis, Eric Nestler, Jeff Coffin, Connie Frigo, Tim Ries, Christian Forshaw, Griffin Campbell, and Jason Kush to a vast audience of music educators.. As an international author, his articles have been accepted for publication in Clarinet and Saxophone Society of Great Britain Magazine, Canadian Music Educator, Viento (Spain), Clasax (Australia), and Les Cahiers Du Saxophone (France). He was the youngest American to be published in this French saxophone magazine, where his writings have been printed alongside French saxophone virtuosos Jean-Marie Londeix, Claude Delangle, Vincent David, and Marie-Bernadettee Charrier.
His accomplishments span both the musical and academic fields. Sean has three times been named the winner of grants for Scholarly and Creative Research. He has performed at both the United States Naval International Saxophone Symposium and the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional and Biennial Conferences. Additionally, he was a semifinalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition and a quarterfinalist in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Additionally, was also named the first ever winner of the Slippery Rock University Concerto Competition. He currently holds the position of private saxophone instructor in the Richardson, Allen and Lewisville Independent School Districts of Texas where he coordinates a studio of over fifty saxophonists. His students have received numerous accolades winning principal chairs in numerous festivals, receiving honor awards in chamber music competitions, and winning concerto competitions. In 2012 , Sean founded Murphy Music Press, a publishing company dedicated to the distribution of outstanding saxophone literature. His principal teachers include Eric Nestler, Jason Kush, Terry Steele, Chris Hemmingway, Jeremy Long, and Varden Armstrong. He has also engaged in supplemental saxophone study with Chien-Kwan Lin, Timothy McAllister, Greg Banaszak, James Umble, and Michael Ibrahim among others.
