The "ALLIAGE QUINTET" isoneofthemostcreativeandsuccessfulsaxophoneensembles in Germany and Europe. Itscharacteristicsare a hugediversity in style, but also theblendingof different epochsandwaysofplaying. This is also represented in theirname: alliageisthe French physicaltermfor "alloy", thusreferringtothesaxophonebeing an alloyofcopperandzinc. In thebroader sense, itdescribesthemusical ideal ofthefivemusiciansformingonehomogeneouswholeandtheirperfectlyattunedplay. The quintet was foundedby Daniel Gauthier, currentlytheonlyprofessorforclassicalsaxophone in Germany (Hochschule für Musik, Cologne) andtheensemble‘sleaderandsopranist. He isjoinedbythreeofthepresentlybestsoloists on thesaxophone: Eva Barthas, alto, KoryunAsatryan (laureateEurovisionscompetition), tenor, and Sebastian Pottmeier, baritone. The threelatterstudied in Amsterdam, Bordeaux and Paris, and also teachat German conservatories. The quintetiscompletedbytheKoreanpianist Jang EunBae, experiencedand well-versedchambermusician. The quintet‘scorerepertoireconsistsof well-knownmasterpiecesof all epochs, exceptionallysesitivelyandcleverlyarrangedfortheensemble. CurrentprogrammesincludeVivaldi'sFourSeasons, Mendelssohn's A MidsummerNight'sDream, Rimski-Korsakov's Scheherazade, Carmen by Bizet andGershwin'sPorgyandBess. Furthermore, original worksofthestandardrepertoireforclassicalsaxophonequartett hold an importantpositionforAlliage. These includethegrandquartetsof Alexander Glazunowand Florent Schmitt aswellascontemporarycomposers such as Georges AperghisandIannisXenakis. Withitsuniqueprogramme, theAlliageQuintetperformssuccessfully on thenarrowridgebetweensubtlechambermusicandsophisticatedentertainmentandcanfillthemajorconcerthallsthroughout Germany and Europe. Besidesseveralradiobroadcastings, theensemblehas so farpublishedtwo CDs, oneofwhich ("Una voce poco fa") receivedtherenowned ECHO Klassik award in 2005. On theirsecond CD, "A la recherche du rêveperdu", thefivemusicianstravelled back in time to Adolphe Sax, inventorofthesaxophone, toconfronthisinstrumentwithworksofhiscontemporaries Mendelssohn and Schumann. Their CD "Masquerade" witharrangementsof J. S. Bach andre-compositionsofVivaldi‘sFourSeasonshasbeenreleasedat SONY CLASSICAL. In March 2011 theirnew CD „Voyage Russe" will bereleased (againforthelabel SONY) with a musicalfocusiónthe „Belle epoque Russe" and will beaccompaniedby an extensive concert tour through Germany and Europe.
